Types of Craps Bets
Before getting into what you’ll win, let’s begin our craps payout guide by touching on the various types of bets up for grabs in a typical game. It is imperative that you understand how these bets work before trying to play them. We’ve got another blog detailing craps and how to play with strategies. Assuming you’re familiar already with craps bets, here’s the short version:
- Come/Don’t Come Bets: Bet on the shooter winning outright (on a 7 or 11) with a Come Bet. Alternatively, bet on them losing (on 2s, 3s or 12s).
- Pass/Don’t Pass Bets: If the shooter rolls a seven before the point, Pass Line bets lose. Hitting the point number before a seven results in a Pass Line win. If the seven rolls first, Don’t Pass bets win. If the point number appears first, Don’t Pass bets lose.
- Place Bets: A Place bet pays if the number you choose rolls before a seven.
- Other Bets: All other bets in craps, including props, require something specific happening or appearing on the dice to result in a win. Check our craps guide for in-depth details about the array of bets available here and how they work.
Pass Line, Don’t Pass, Come and Don’t Come Payouts
Pass Line odds mirror those of Come bets. There is a win probability of 49.29% (50.71% you’ll lose) and a house edge of 1.41%.
Don’t Pass and Don’t Come bets offer a 47.93% chance of success, 49.29% chance of defeat, and 2.78% chance of your bet pushing. The house edge here is 1.36%. You’ll receive even money (1:1) payouts for all successful bets.
Place Bet Prizes
Your success with place bets varies. For instance, 4s and 10s both offer 9:5 payouts and have house edges of 6.67%. It’s more favourable to bet on 5s and 9s, with lower house edges of 4.0%, but smaller payouts of 7:5. Wagering on 6s and 8s is the smartest and most likely way to grab prizes with place bets. Here, the house edge is as low as 1.52%. That’s reflected in your prizes, though, with 7:6 payouts.
Prop Bets and Rewards
Essentially side bets, you’ll wager prop bets on the specific outcome of rolls. Let’s move on with our craps payout guide by touching on some of these.
- Horn Bet: A bet on several prop numbers. Bet on 3s or 11s to win 3.75:1, while Horn Bets on 2s or 12s pay 7.5:1.
- Any Craps: Betting on 2s, 3s and 12s yields prizes worth 7:1.
- Any Sevens: This bet offers prizes of 4:1.
- Hardways: Here, you’ll bet on doubles (4, 6, 8 and 10). They must appear (as doubles) before a seven, and bets lose if the numbers appear in any other combination, such as a 3 and 1 (totalling 4) instead of two 2s. Twelve is excluded from Hardways since you can only roll a 12 using two 6s. Hardways bets on 4s or 10s pay 8:1, rising to 10:1 for 6s or 8s.
Other Bets and Their Payouts
You shouldn’t need to learn how to calculate craps payouts. For the most part, you’ll see the potential prizes on a paytable when playing online craps. The only time you might want to consider calculations is when commission is involved, namely via buy and lay bets. Let’s touch on those next in our craps payout guide.
Buy Bets
Buy bets work similarly to place bets, but they use true odds. It’s important to note that there is a 5% commission applied to what you win, which sort of cancels out the slightly better odds you receive. Using true odds, buy bets payouts are effectively 2:1 on 4s and 10s, 3:2 on 5s and 9s, and 6:5 on 6s and 8s.
Lay-væddemål
A lay bet sees you wagering against the shooter by betting on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 appearing. In effect, they are the opposite of place bets. You’re wagering that those numbers will not be hit before a seven.
There is a 5% commission again, but it may appear on all or only winning lay bets. You’ll receive winnings of 6:5 on 6s and 8s, 3:2 on 5s and 9s, and 2:1 on 4s and 10s, no matter how the commission works, but the house edges vary.
Single Rolls
These bets don’t count as prop bets, and you’ll only bet them over a single roll. Good examples include Snake Eyes and Midnight. Snake Eyes is a bet on two (a pair of 1s) offers 30:1, which is lower than its probability of 35:1. Midnight bets involve wagering on the 12s that didn’t appear in the Hardways bet.
Ofte stillede spørgsmål
Which craps bet offers the best payouts?
Snake Eyes is the best in our list, at 30:1. However, the same is true when betting on a pair of 12s, known as Midnight bets, or “all the spots in all the dots”.
What does a Hardways bet pay in craps?
That depends on which type of bet you’re making at the table. Hardways can pay 8:1 or 10:1, depending on whether you’re wagering on 4s or 10s, or 6s or 8s.
Are online craps payouts the same as those in land-based casinos?
For the most part, yes. However, some online craps variants feature bespoke rules, some unique to their casinos, and these may offer alternative payouts.
Can I win a progressive jackpot in craps?
In theory, no. However, some online craps games feature their own unique side-bets, and some could potentially feature jackpot prizes. It isn’t common, though.
Do I have to pay commissions on my craps winnings?
Sometimes, yes. Buy and Lay bets both come with a 5% commission, otherwise known as “action” in craps games. Whether you pay commission on all bets or only winning ones varies from site to site.
